“His hands were born to play. John’s versatility always made my tunes sound better.” – Dan Hicks

“John Girton is one of the hippest, most lyrical, most delightful musicians I have ever worked with. I recall when Dan Hicks had his 60th birthday bash and assembled all of his illustrious musical alumni to perform at the Warfield, John Girton’s mellifluous guitar playing shone over and above the work of the entire stellar cast. Years ago, when John was in my band, we were recording with an all star line-up headed by Benny Carter that included the famous jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell, and Benny Carter assigned the solos to John Girton. That’s how wonderful a player he is.” - Maria Muldaur

“A treasure.” – Joe Craven

“You could tell the guitarists in the audience by the way they stared slack-jawed at Girton’s left hand. …a la Joe Pass, Girton performs the seemingly impossible task of punctuating complex chord progressions with be-bop bass lines to create the feeling that two instruments are playing simultaneously.” – Tad Toomay, Sacramento News & Review

John Girton is well known throughout the world for his work as lead guitarist with the group “Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks.” John recorded 3 albums with the group, and also wrote and arranged material for them. He was also featured as guitarist, saxophonist, clarinetist, and occasional mandolinist with the popular vocalist, Maria Muldaur for many years.

After numerous international tours, John started his own group in the San Francisco area. This group, the “Girtones” played a blend of Jazz, Swing and Blues in Oregon and California, sometimes including singer Maria Muldaur as a member.

John has made several solo tours of England, where he performed in concerts and clubs throughout the country. These days he performs locally and is quite active in the Nevada County Music scene.

He currently performs solo jazz guitar at various venues in the Foothills area of California and has recently released a new CD called “You Are There”, which was produced at John’s “Nugget Studios” in Grass Valley, CA.

John has been playing music professionally for over 20 years as an instrumentalist, vocalist, recording artist, studio musician, and composer. His original songs are a mixture of jazz, swing, blues and folk music, with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. You can hear some of these tunes on his latest CD, “Greatest Hits.

John also has several years as a computer technician.

But its background is web site development, graphic design, direct marketing, and database programming. In Spring 2006, the Nevada County Community Network (NCCN) Board of Directors asked Chip Carman and John Paul, the owners of Spiral, to bring new services and energies to their customer base. Because of Spiral’s active community volunteer work in western Nevada County, NCCN felt we were the perfect fit to take care of the over 200 non-profit organizations, as well as over 1500 customers, that rely on friendly, reliable Internet access, web site hosting and technical support. We thought about it for a few days, then came back and said “yes”.

Since 1986, Spiral has also provided creative services to a wide range of clientele including book & magazine publishers, high-tech industries, medical facilities, trade show companies, and manufacturers – adding professional web site development to their scope of services in 1997.

Janaia co-founded APPLE (Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy) and helped bring Peak Oil educator Richard Heinberg to Grass Valley later that year. His presentation was the first video in Peak Moment Television’s lineup of Specials.

Early in 2006 the Yuba Gals began producing “Peak Moment Conversations: Community Responses for a Changing Energy Future” with local guests. Programs were cablecast weekly on NCTV, Nevada county’s local community access TV station. By mid-2009, over 150 Conversations are online at www.peakmoment.tv/conversations, with more than a million viewings worldwide. They are cablecast on about fifty community access TV stations nationwide, including free distribution through PegMedia. Viewers say they love the inspiring personal stories and value the fresh perspectives which help make sense of the rapidly-changing world around us.

Peak Moment Conversations showcase first-person stories empowering locally-reliant living while adapting to the new economic conditions. The half-hour programs feature host Janaia Donaldson’s conversations, field tours, and occasional presentation excerpts. Seeking models among grassroots entrepreneurs working to create a sustainable future, Robyn and Janaia climbed into their Vanagon camper in summer 2006, visited over 20 West Coast communities, and taped more than 90 Peak Moment Conversations.

The Peak Moment Television Special dvds include presentations by Guy Dauncey on “The New Energy Revolution” (2006), Michelle Long on “Building a Local Community and Economy” (2007), Richard Heinberg at APPLE’s “Kiss Your Gas Goodbye” (2008), an “Introduction to Permaculture” workshop with local Cathe’ Fish, and “Traditional Nourishment” cooking class with Shan Kendall.

Saving The Sierra: Voices of Conservation in Action explores the geographic, political and philosophical boundaries of the new Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Through public media and citizen storytelling, the project documents community efforts to conserve the environment, culture, and economy of the Sierra Nevada.

Saving The Sierra focuses on the challenges and successes of conservation in the rural and remote communities of the range that is home to more than two million Californians. The Sierra is also home to majestic Yosemite National Park, sparkling Lake Tahoe, and towering giant sequoias, as well as burgeoning resort developments and suburban style residential and commercial sprawl that threaten the sustainability of rural life and the environmental integrity of the region.
